Major congestion eased on A4a

The new motorway through the Kronau region has considerably eased congestion on the Walterswil intersection and led to improvements on other roads, too. For years, radio announcements of "traffic jams on the A4a" were daily fixtures, and many motorists will remember jams by the Baar exit as well. Sometimes the Süd/Weststrasse was so congested there were tailbacks way back towards Cham. "Now all this is over and traffic is flowing freely again," said delighted Heinz Tännler, head of construction for Zug.
"It's a great improvement for Walterswil," agreed Urs Spillmann, head of the planning and construction department for Baar. However, the new motorway and the Nordstrasse have little effect on the village centre. The Zugerstrasse is less congested, but there are still traffic queues in the evenings. It is hoped the situation will improve when the Feldstrasse underpass in Zug opens in June, but the real problem will not be solved until the Zug/Baar link is built.
It is not yet clear to what extent traffic has been reduced on the A4a but initial counts immediately after the opening suggested a reduction of 25-30% on the Baar-Walterswil-Sihlbrugg section.
There have been improvements in Menzingen too, and while no exact statistics are available, secretary to the council Peter Bugmann seems to think that there is now less traffic.
