International Men's Club of Zug
Introducing the IMCZ Investment Forum – an exciting new activity that has sprung out of the membership.
Since the beginning of 2008, IMCZ has grown explosively, attracting over 130 foreign and Swiss nationals, swelling its membership to 260. Although the ongoing influx of companies into the Canton is undoubtedly a key factor, IMCZ President, David LeBow, firmly believes that the Club’s ‘magic’ recipe for success is paying close attention to members’ social and networking needs. Consequently, at one of our weekly ‘Stammtisch’ meetings a group of members came up with the idea of organizing an Investment Forum.
And the idea did seem to hit the right resonance! Perhaps it’s because most of us are looking for new answers in the aftermath of the financial melt-down that caused such a massive loss of wealth, but also because many members are entrepreneurs, CEO, CFO, bankers, asset managers, and most importantly investors; each willing to share unique experiences with colleagues in a learn-as-we-go atmosphere that the Investment Forum is dedicated to promote. Hence the Forum’s motto ‘Knowledge Guides!”
In the first video ever broadcast to the membership John Henry Smith, the Club Treasurer, announced the Forum’s intention to hold monthly interactive sessions with case studies, lively discussions, competitions, presentations, videos and even a stock-market trading game thrown in; all designed to make the learning experience enjoyable.
The first session took place in the Parkhotel on September 1, 2009 with 28 members registered for the event. In three hours, the participants, divided into three groups, were given two exercises. The first exercise dealt with the threat of an exploding money supply, high inflation and higher interest rates. Rather than search for solutions, each group was given an answer and from their material was asked to justify their positions in very lively and interesting discussions.
After the ½ hour break, the groups were asked to ‘spend’ no more than $200 to select a portfolio from 30 SP500 stocks. To help in their quest each group received a report on every stock. The performance of the 3 portfolios will be tracked over the next two months. In October, their selections will be analyzed to give everyone insights into why the stocks were chosen in the first place and why they performed the way they did. At the end of the competition, the winning group will win a prize. However, to win, a group must not only out-perform the market, but must beat the other two groups, as well.
If you wish to learn more about the art of investing without putting your own funds at risk, why don’t you come along to the next Forum on October 6th to see for yourself? Or better still, become a member of the IMCZ for the sheer joy of networking in the English language. If you’d like to know more about our Club all you have to do is click on our website:
