Increase in number of companies in the canton
According to statistics published by the Cantonal Department of Economic Development on Wednesday, more companies were registered in Zug in 2011 than in the previous year.
The precise figures showed that there were 30,154 companies registered in the canton in 2011, 513 more than in the previous year, compared with an increase of 507 during the course of 2009.
Of the types of companies registered, the most popular were corporations (companies in the German-speaking business world with AG for Aktiengesellschaft after their names, and limited liability companies for those companies with GmbH, standing for Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, after their names).
Of the total companies registered, over half (17,102) were corporations and these also represented the largest increase in the figures for 2011, namely 297. There then followed an increase of 219 limited liability companies bringing the total in 2011 to 7,525.
When all the entries undertaken to the Companies Registry in 2011 were taken into consideration, including new entries, alterations and deletions, the number was down by 9% to 17,464.
Other types of businesses registered as of the end of 2011 included 112 cooperatives, 174 associations, 346 foundations along with 274 subsidiaries of Swiss companies and 306 subsidiaries of foreign companies and just one partnership limited by shares.
Much work was caused at the Department of Economic Development last year by the amendment of a law which came into effect in 2008, whereby the Companies Registry Office was under the obligation to admonish companies which were insufficiently organised to bring themselves up to the new legal standards. As an increasing number of businesses attempt to delete entries themselves, many have to be referred to the cantonal court, which has the power to dissolve a company if the shortcomings are not rectified.
