How to reduce energy levels

Last May the population of the city of Zug voted by 51.47% to strive for the aims of the so-called 2000 Watt Society, which include reducing energy consumption by 2000 Watts and 1 ton of CO2 per capita by 2050.

While it may be an honourable aim, many questions were raised as to how consumers could achieve this, which is why the Zug Energy Network Association, sponsored by the Zug Wasserwerke Zug energy provider (WWZ), has planned 4 information evenings in January and February to explain more about it all. Rüedi Rüegg, who is coordinating the series of lectures and question sessions, said, "We know in which direction we are going with regard to energy, but many are not clear about how to get there, hence the series of talks and discussions."

The first of the evening sessions began on Wednesday with Heinz Tännler, Cantonal Director of Planning, and architect and co-initiator Roland Stulz along with Martin Ménard, member of the Swiss Engineers' and Architects' Association (SIA) discussing and explaining more about the "2040 Energy Efficiency Path" leaflet, which was published last September, and which serves as an aid to achieving the goals of the 2000 Watt Society.

The evenings are open to anyone interested in the subject, though Rüegg expects most of those attending will be architects, builders and energy advisors. "If house-owners wish to find out more about how to achieve the aims of the 2000 Watt Society, they will be more than welcome, too," said Rüegg. "Our plan is to provide simple and clear information."

The further lectures will take place on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 25 January and on Thursday 2 February at the Theater Casino in Zug's Artherstrasse. Subjects such as the choice of building materials for houses and the interaction between architecture and building technology will be covered in 90-minute sessions, which will include a panel discussion with four experts, not least Beat Hermann of the Zug General Building Cooperation.

It was also announced that the Zug Energy Network Association in cooperation with the cantonal government will be providing free telephone advice with regard to reducing energy, a service which will not only help cut consumers' costs but help the environment, too.
