Expats enjoy the quality of life here

According to a recent nationwide survey, expats enjoy the quality of life here but do not feel welcome in Switzerland and find it very difficult to make friends with locals. In fact the survey showed that expats felt less welcome here than those in Vietnam and Uganda.

While Switzerland fared quite well as a welcoming country to expats in 2014, when it came fourth out of 61 countries, one year later it had dropped to 14th place. This latest survey puts Switzerland in 31st place out of 67 countries in all.

Having gone down 17 places since the previous survey, Switzerland ranks alongside countries like the United Arab Emirates (-21), Indonesia (-20), Hong Kong (-18), which have also fallen down the list (the figures in brackets showing by how many places).

On the other hand, countries such as Vietnam (+24) and Uganda (+20) have gone up the lists and quite considerably so. With Vietnam rated overall in place 11 and Uganda in place 25, these two countries were regarded far more favourably than Switzerland.

On the more positive side, as mentioned, expats showed they very much appreciated the quality of life they experienced here, to which the excellent transport infrastructure, public safety and the health system all contributed. It was just in social matters, this lack of mix between expats and locals outside working hours, that Switzerland fared very badly, coming 64th out of the 67 countries considered.
