EVZ beat Davos to go top
EV Zug scored an enormous win on Saturday night, defeating perennial powerhouses Davos 3-2 to return to the top of the league and put themselves in pole position to secure home ice throughout the play-offs with just four games of the regular season remaining.
The opening period was a cagey affair – as is to be expected when the top two teams in the NLA clash so close to the end of the regular season – but after these two heavyweights had sounded each other out like a pair of prize fighters, the match suddenly exploded into life. Davos took the lead with under two minutes remaining, only for Zug to equalise virtually on the buzzer through Corsin Casutt, after good work from Duri Camichel who seems to be rounding into form again as the season wears on.
The second period was all Zug. HCD took three minors, EVZ scored two goals. The first came on the last of those three power plays, goalie Jussi Markkanen (photo) coming out of his net to dish off to Damian Brunner, who set up defenceman Patrick Fischer just as the man advantage was expiring. Glen Metropolit, again preferred to Esa Pirnes as the fourth foreign import after his excellent play in Geneva the night before, then made it 3-1 with a flashy wristed backhander.
That looked to be enough, as Zug controlled the puck well in the final period. Davos coach Arno del Curto took his time-out midway through however, reorganised his team and HCD duly halved the deficit with eight minutes remaining. The rest of the match was then a cavalcade of penalties. Duri's brother Corsin, who joined Davos from Zug just a week ago, was given two minutes for obstruction, then Metropolit followed him into the sin-bin for hooking with just over two minutes remaining. EVZ held firm, only for Alessandro Chiesa to get a major with 10.6 seconds left on the clock! Davos pulled their goalie and went 6-on-4, but Josh Holden won the face-off and the points were safe.
Zug are now a point clear of Davos and four ahead of Fribourg with just four games to go. After a two-week break, EVZ return to action on 18 February and play the teams currently sitting sixth, seventh, tenth and twelfth in this 12-team league to conclude the regular season. Top spot is within their grasp, and what an achievement that would be…
