European Heritage Days 2017

On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September, locals will have the opportunity of getting to know more about some of the canton’s historic buildings on the occasion of European Heritage Days,  a weekend organised jointly by the Council of Europe and the European Commission across 50 countries, and in which the canton of Zug has been involved since 1995, the authorities here able to decide themselves what is to be opened to the public.

This year, the subject of these Heritage Days focuses on “power and splendour”, with locals able to find out more, for example, about the many ornately decorated oriel windows on buildings in the Old Town (such as on the Hotel Ochsen), the Zug Parliament building (photograph), which dates back to 1871, the richly decorated rooms of the Butchers’ and Bakers’ Guilds. In addition, they can find out why such fine materials were used in the construction of the parish buildings in Unterägeri at the beginning of the 18th century and what actually lies behind those thick concrete walls of the Philippsburg in Unterägeri.

The answers to all of these questions will be provided by expert guides from the Cantonal Office of the Preservation of Monuments, Historic Buildings and Archaeology (ADA), the Military History Foundation of the Canton of Zug, and a number of local museums.

As Stefan Hochuli, the head of the ADA, said, the interest in these ornamental features of older buildings, and not least their preservation, has increased as more and more modern buildings have been built in the city.

The events organised this weekend will not only mean more people will be able to have access to these architectural gems, but also that those involved with them in all sorts of ways will be able to engage with the public about them.
