Motor ship "Schwyz" is to be rechristened

In a large-scale operation at the end of October 2023, the motor vessel MS Schwyz was transported from Lake Zug to the harbour in Weesen on Lake Walensee in the canton of St.Gallen (we reported at the time: ed.).

Up to the end of December, the "Schwyz", as the ship is currently still called, sailed on Lake Walensee carrying out test runs. But the current name is no longer suited to the new surroundings; a new one is needed, according to an article recently published in the Südostschweiz newspaper.

Renaming ships is a tricky business, however: "The water gods have to be appeased with alcohol," says Daniel Grünenfelder, Managing Director of Schiffsbetrieb Walensee. The new christening will take place at the beginning of March 2024: on the 10th of the month, the official christening of the ship will take place before the public in Unterterzen.

The MS Schwyz was brought from Lake Zug to Lake Walensee at the end of October in an elaborate transport operation. Numerous spectators watched the spectacle

Daniel Grünenfelder will not yet reveal the new name of the ship. But he does say that official delegations from the Glarus and St.Gallen cantonal governments will be present at the naming ceremony.

If they still need an idea for a christening gift, Grünenfelder says he would be very happy to see the cantonal coats of arms for St.Gallen and Glarus on the stern.
