Employees in the canton have the highest average wage in Switzerland

Switzerland's highest wages are paid in the canton of Zug, according to a report in the “Tages-Anzeiger”, with Zug topping the rankings in all selected industries. The average monthly median wage in the banking / finance, IT / telecommunications and medical technology sectors, for example, is more than CHF 8,000, while wages in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry are only slightly lower. at CHF 7,901. According to the ranking, the lowest median salary earned in the canton of Zug is CHF 4,768 in the hotel and restaurant industry. By comparison, employees in the same branch in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden earn the least, with CHF 4,164.

The economic director is not surprised that the canton of Zug leads the wage comparison ranking. Silvia Thalmann explains: "If you take national financial equalisation figures (inter-cantonal compensation payments) as a yardstick, which is roughly based on value added per capita, among other things, the published ranking is not a big surprise."

Wages in Zug have been at the level of the Zurich economic area for some years. "The continuous, stable economic development of the Canton of Zug, characterised by a high proportion of companies with strong added value, is reflected in the ranking."

Thalmann further states that, together with Basel-City, the canton of Zug has by far the highest national income per capita (around CHF 160,000). In addition, Zug as a business location is characterised by a highly diversified industry structure - including many international companies which, according to Thalmann, are being pushed to high productivity and value creation by global competition.

"The high added value and productivity can only be achieved with appropriately qualified to highly qualified personnel," concludes the economics director. Companies are thereby already considering level of education and potential performance when recruiting new employees. "The economic result is above-average wages."

The average wage levels are thereby the result of a prospering economic development. "The canton of Zug is characterised and stands out from the possible competition in that a whole bundle of relevant location factors are very well developed," says Thalmann, meaning not only "competitive taxes", but also, for example, the availability of workers, a good infrastructure, international outlook or educational opportunities.

The basis of the wage comparison in the “Tages-Anzeiger” is the data from the Lohncheck.ch platform.
