Di Pietro breaks Zug hearts
Say it ain't so, Paul… 41-year-old Paul Di Pietro, who was not given a contract extension at the end of last season and decided to ply his trade with the SC Langnau Tigers, came back to haunt his old club on Saturday night. The veteran Canadian forward was involved in all four Langnau goals, scored the opener and the late equaliser and was generally a thorn in EVZ's side all night as the leaders slipped to a 4-3 overtime loss.
Andy Wozniewski, who had another good night and was the only blueline to come out with any real credit, cancelled out Di Pietro's first goal and then Zug took charge in the middle of the second period, through goals from Björn Christen (playing on a second line with Sven Lindemann and Esa Pirnes, with Glen Metropolit again a healthy scratch) and Fabian Schnyder (on the top line as usual).
That should have been that, but Langnau halved the deficit less than a minute before the buzzer, and then came Di Pietro's equaliser six minutes from the end of a scrappy, ill-tempered third period which saw plenty of minors, a major and a full-scale dropping of the gloves involving Yannick Blaser and one of his opponents.
Langnau struck early in overtime and handed Zug their second overtime loss in as many days over the weekend. It still leaves them top of the table and extends their lead ever so slightly, but Davos will be able to overtake them with a win at home to bottom club Rapperswil on Tuesday night. EVZ meanwhile travel to Servette on Friday (while Davos face a hard-charging Berne team) and then host Davos on Saturday in what could be a title decider.
