Defective host computer leads to failure of ZVB's electronic information boards

For almost three weeks passengers awaiting the arrival or departures of buses at Baar station have not been able to find out the times of such from the electronic display boards because of a problem with the host computer.

As Kathrin Howald, the spokeswoman of the ZVB transport company, explained, a defect in the host computer, which sends out information to the individual electronic display boards, meant that it had to be returned to the manufacturer and this repair took longer than expected.

In fact it was because of the time the repair took that the transport company decided to take this opportunity to have this host computer updated with the latest software and also have it changed over from an analogue to a digital system; this has now been up and running since Friday 2 February.

Despite the system not working for so long, Howard said the company had had no complaints, thanks in no small way to bus drivers always being prepared to provide passengers with all the information they needed. And of course, travellers were always able to make use of online timetables, which were not affected.

Basically, Howard said the company had been happy with this system which has been in operation for three years now. Indeed the “vbl” transport company of Lucerne uses the same one. Other electronic information boards linked to the system have since been set up at various other highly frequented stops, such as at the stations in Zug, Baar and Cham, at the Metalli Centre, and on Postplatz in the city, with more planned.
