Temporary roundabout to be made permanent
Local motorists cannot have failed to notice the orange and white bollards forming a circle in front of the Bossard Arena, after all, they have been there for four years. Now a permanent roundabout it to be built at the site to help the flow of traffic from the underground car park at the Bossard Arena as well as access to and from the Herti Centre, the football stadium and Weststrasse.
Work is due begin on the new roundabout at the end of August with completion expected in autumn. But why has it taken four years after the temporary roundabout was set up in spring 2008?
"It was decided to wait until all building work was complete on the Bossard Arena and the Uptown building," explained Nicole Nussberger of the city planning office. "It was during the construction of the very deep foundations for the underground car park at the Bossard Arena that the street level was actually lowered so we decided to wait until this was complete, too, before starting work on the roundabout."
In addition to the new concrete roundabout, work on upgrading Allmendstrasse Nord will also start in August. This will involve new drainage, re-surfacing, upgrading the street lighting as well as planting of a number of trees.
