Flash floods in Zug and Luzern

On Thursday evening, heavy rainfall led to flash flooding in the Cantons of Zug and Luzern. According to officials, the area hit hardest was the region east of the city of Luzern between Rotkreuz and Risch in the Canton of Zug.

Firefighters in Zug and Rotkreuz were called to the scenes of flooded basements and apartments according to Andreas Sidler, spokesman for the Zug Police. All firefighters were on duty. At approximately 20.30, the flooding caused a collision of two vehicles on the A4 between Rotkreuz and the exit to Kussnacht, which led to two people being injured.

In Meierskappel, where the 4-day country festival began on Thursday evening, the Erlibach overflowed its banks, leaving the campground 1 meter underwater, according to Gregor Amstutz, team leader of the Meierskappel Firefighters. While no one was injured at the camping ground, several caravans and campers were destroyed in the flood.

One of those affected was Peter Hodel, from Wollishofen. “Shortly after 18.00, I put the sausages on the grill,” explained the veteran camper from Zürich. “When the rains came, I pushed the grill under the canopy,” but then it came down in buckets. A few minutes later the entire campground was under a meter of water. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Hodel said. It remains is unclear whether or not Hodel will be able to use his camper again, which was under 80 cm of floodwater.
