City to provide CHF 1.18 million contribution

The greater city council has given its unanimous approval for a CHF 1.18 million contribution to the construction of 48 flats for old people on the site of the former Waldheim old people’s home.

At present objections raised by neighbours to the site are being considered, but if all goes to plan then these flats, some with three rooms and others with two, will be built; each one designed so that it is easily accessible for elderly and disabled people.

The development (the photograph shows a computer-generated image) is being built with 51% of the flats belonging to the Foundation of Old-Age Centres of the City of Zug (AZZ) and 49% of them owned by the Citizens’ Community of Zug (BGZ). One sticking point at the meeting related to the possible sale of flats to third parties. The contract stipulated that in the event of the BGZ wanting to sell any of its share of the flats, the AZZ should have priority, though if they opted not to, then there was the possibility of their being sold to third parties. However, representatives of all parties on the council agreed they did not want this to happen. Fortunately, following the discussion from the public gallery was Hans Christen, the chairman of the AZZ, with whom SVP councillor Philip C. Brunner was able to have a quick word. Christen said that he would assure any such legal loophole in the contract allowing third parties to buy the flats would be amended accordingly to prevent this happening. This reassurance now having been given, the council was able to vote, as mentioned, unanimously, in favour of the contribution.

While on contributions from the city council, readers may remember that an additional CHF 100,000 sum to help refugees in Syria had been proposed and this was duly approved, too, despite opposition from the SVP party and some members of the FDP.
