Christmas Shopping Guide

The magic of Christmas has settled over Zug and our lovely town looks more charming than ever. The anticipation of the coming holidays is in the air spiced up by the smell of roasted walnuts, cinnamon cookies and mulled wine. The Christmas trees are decorated, the lights are on and people are already thinking of the cosy nights with their loved ones and the opening of the presents. I have to admit, however, there is always one big spoiler of the good mood and this is the experience of Christmas shopping. For some people of course it might be over by now, but for those like me, who just can’t imagine buying Christmas presents in their flip-flops and definitely need the Christmas carols in the background of those chilly winter days, the shopping hasn’t started yet. Most people think that Zurich offers more choice and fun, but it can also turn into a disappointment if you don’t know where exactly to find your presents or just are not prepared for the crowds. ZUG4YOU.ch has a better idea for you: In our Christmas shopping guide this year we suggest a list of wonderful ideas that you can not only find in Zug, but also help you to choose the local brands and support the local businesses.

Happy Christmas shopping!

Weihnachtspflümli

There are two things that Zug is world-famous for: the Kirsch Torte (Cherry cake) and the Zuger Kirsch. Kirsch is for the Swiss what whiskey is for the Scots and Cognac for the French. Zug in particular and the Etter family have a long tradition in distilling different types of Kirsch. The fruits are hand picked from he region and treated with great care, which may be one of the secrets behind the heavenly taste of the drink. Every Christmas the Etter family releases a limited edition of a special holiday Kirsch, spiced with a selection of winter spices that make the drink just perfect for the season. This year the Weihnachtspflümli is a light liqueur, made of one of the oldest local sorts of plums with added touches of cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. To complement the elegance and magic of this Christmas elixir the Etter family have chosen tall dark bottles with golden stars. You can buy the Weihnachtspflümli from the ETTER shop at the Chollerstrasse 4 in Zug or at their online shop

In Pandora’s box

A piece of jewellery is a classic gift for Christmas and it can say a lot to your loved ones. You just have to make sure you choose the right one. In Zug there are many goldsmiths and accessories ateliers, but one of our favourites remains the Wassmann Atelier, popular for its excellent quality and choice of precious stones. The craftsmen there make some of the most heartbreaking pieces I’ve ever seen. The approach to each gemstone is very gentle and preserves its natural raw beauty. The best example is a pair of tanzanite earrings, perfect for a Christmas gift.  They carry intense splendour and irresistible charm that makes you fall at their feet and beg for mercy. Each earring is made out of three tanzanites, very impressive in size and in transparency. The earrings recall exaggerated teardrops. As all the pieces at Atelier Wassmann these earrings are unique.

Let’s talk about men and their hobbies

Among the most popular of men’s hobbies is football. Christmas is an excellent opportunity to show your man how much you respect his hobby and buy him a …. Heat and football jacket by Paul & Shark. What you actually want to tell him with that present is that he can see his favourite football team at the stadium without having to give up the warmth and comfort of the home sofa or armchair. As a matter of fact this garment is equipped with an inside strip that may be warmed through a rechargeable device, able to provide the body with an ideal temperature, even under the most rigorous conditions such as a winter football match. You can find the jacket at Mode Schneider at Kolinplatz 2 in Zug

Your good deed during Christmas

Do three good deeds at once with the purchase of a Terre des Hommes Christmas ornament. If you purchase this Zug Christmas ornament, you on the one hand support the mother-child health projects of Terre des Hommes (TdH) in Mauritania, on the other hand, help Polish women, who paint these unique pieces by hand. Last but not least: The sale of this gorgeous and sparkling TdH ornament is sure to bring joy to the Zug population.

The ornaments are made at home by Polish women. It provides them a professional and economic independence. The ornaments are13 centimeter in diameter and decorated with beautiful landmarks of Zug, as well as the Zytturm (Clock Tower) and the snowy old town of Zug and are available in red and blue.

This project enables the development of health care for children in Mauritania, primarily in the actions of nutrition. This year, the TdH has been cited several times as a reference, both by the Ministry of Health as well as by international institutions such as UNICEF and WHO.

The revenues from Tdh are allocated with 87% going directly in the projects while 13% is used for administration in Switzerland and for the support of local projects. The work of Terre des Hommes is also supported by nearly 2,000 volunteers in all of Switzerland.

Available at Zug Tourismus at the main station in Zug.

Helden SPA sanctuary

Christmas is the time when we finally start thinking how to better take care of ourselves, relax and pamper our skin and bodies or simply glamorize before all these parties ahead. There is a place in Zug where you can find all the traditional services such as massages, facials, waxing, manicures and pedicures, but trimmed up with a unique experience. Here is the deal: you can take your girlfriends or mother for a re-charging afternoon in the harmonious and adjacent sanctuary of Helden SPA, where you will be treated like a star. A girlfriends’ day for example includes a manicure, pedicure with foot-bath and a small healthy lunch with a glass of champagne. Another spoiling and unforgettable experience is “Bye-Bye stress day”, which includes manicure, pedicure, aromatherapy massage, lunch and later cake and coffee, while you also get your daily or evening make-up. It is the most amazing present you can get for your girlfriend.

There is one more piece that would catch your attention just when you think you have seen all the details and finely-made pieces at Helden and after you have tried their delicious home-made recipes. Another wonderful idea for a Christmas gift, which I couldn’t stop myself from buying: the organic treatment candles, These luxury organic 3-wick candles are made with only a blend of vegetable wax, no synthetic scents and no chemicals. Not only that, but the heavenly scent of these candles works as a treatment to relax, revive or pamper. The candles burn with no wax wastage for nearly 55 hours. My pick: the sensuous with ylang ylang, frankincense and patchouli.

Paraiba Tourmaline ring

There is one Christmas lesson I’ve learned about presents and it is that nobody gets excited about woolen socks and knitted deer pullovers. If you still want to remind your “better half” how much you love and care about her (not only at Christmas) don’t experiment, but go for the proven results: a ring with a precious stone (and if possible with a few diamonds). However this is not an easy choice, which is why we’ve decided to give you the perfect example. Our choice is a precious stone that comes from Brazil and holds the most coveted and radiant blue in the world: the exotic Paraiba Tourmaline. Its mesmerizing beauty is born from the rare interplay between the two elements copper and manganese. The extraordinary vividness of this exceptional color cannot be seen until the stone is cut, but once that happens there is no way back - people can’t take their eyes off the Brazilian beauty. If you don’t believe it just look at the ring Maya Sulger has designed: Paraiba tourmaline 7.18 ct, 79 brilliants 0.81 ct, 750 Wg.
