Christmas market to start next week

There is much excitement among those organising the Christmas Market, which starts on Thursday 10 December and continues until the following Sunday, not least since as many as 49 stands will be set up in the area around Postplatz, Zeughausgasse and Hirschenplatz, whereas initially it was thought there would be “just” 35.

“Fortunately we have been able to get permission for this larger number from the city,” said Tatania Vogt, the president of the Zug Christmas Market Association. What was fortunate was that there was space available in the area to be able to accommodate the extra stands. “Another good thing is that there will be good mixture of stands. While some will be run by professionals, we have a lot of associations and private individuals taking part, too. What is more, most stands will actually be run by people from Zug,” added Vogt.

The last time a Christmas Market was held in the city was in 2005 on Landsgemeindeplatz, so apart from Fairy Tale Sunday, there have been very few additional Advent-time attractions in the city. Naturally, the organisers hope that the Christmas Market will now become a permanent fixture on the city’s calendar.

The market actually starts at 5 pm on Thursday 10 December and will continue until 9 pm. Then, on the following Friday and Saturday, it will be open between 11 am and 9 pm (when a children’s carousel will be up and turning) and between 11 am and 6 pm on the Sunday.

Inevitably, Zeughausgasse will be closed to traffic between the hours of 10.30 am and 9.30 pm when the market is on, but deliveries to local shops will still be able to take place.

With everything more or less in place, all Vogt wants now, in addition to seasonal weather, is for as many people to attend as possible and, to this end, flyers have been widely distributed. “Success is necessary if you want to set up a new tradition,” she said.
