"Cherry Cake Mile" project to go ahead

As this year marks the centenary of the creation of the Zug cherry cake, special celebrations will be held throughout the year. In fact the Zug Cherry Cake Association will be setting up a "Cherry Cake Mile" which includes the erection of five large metal cylinders used to promote this local speciality at various places in the city including Bahnhofplatz, Kirschtortenplatz, Bundesplatz, Poststrasse and near the Music School.

There were a number of objections raised to the said cylinders, not least by city lawyer and local resident Raffael Weidmann, who feared long term advertising in the area. Four others agreed with him but their objections were overruled as it was deemed they did not live close enough to the project.

Weidmann was successful in relation to the siting of one of the cylinders, which will now be re-located four metres to the east as its original position could have had an adverse effect on traffic. The lawyer, who agrees that a certain level of advertising the cherry cake is in order this year, was also pleased to hear that the said cylinders will be removed once this celebratory year is over.

Weidmann is continuing in his campaign to prevent the northern part of Bundesplatz being re-named Kirschtortenplatz. As previously reported, fellow objectors can now support him by signing an online petition on www.kirschtortenplatz.ch.

A special 400-page book about cherry cultivation in the canton is also being published in this centenary year. You can read all about it on today's Panorama page.
