Charges against Herti Stadium "vandals" dropped
Just before the Herti Stadium was demolished, it was announced that anyone could go along to the stadium and take whatever they wanted as a souvenir. On Saturday 8 May however, some youths and young adults took the offer literally and went along with hammers and saws to take what they wanted, smashing windows and toilets and ripping out cables.
The damage meant that the the old materials could no longer be disposed of separately as planned, i.e. as wood, glass or concrete, but had to be removed all together to be separated later, which meant additional waste removal costs of CHF 25,000. These were divided between the city as owner of the stadium, the KEB Zug AG (who ran the stadium), the EVZ itself and the Anliker company who built the new Bosshard Arena.
A charge was made against unknown persons, though some of the security staff apparently recognised some of the culprits, three juveniles and seven young adults. However, as some 50 or so were involved it seemed unfair just to charge 10 of them.
Now all charges are to be dropped as it was not made absolutely clear beforehand what could be removed (or smashed, bearing in mind the stadium was to be demolished anyway). "You cannot change the rules after the event," said the solicitor for the young people involved. Furthermore, they were unaware they were doing anything wrong." Although city councillor Hans Christen did not agree with the decision to drop criminal charges, he has relented and now wants the matter closed.
No civil case will be pursued either though Hans-Rudolph Wild, chairman of the board of the KEB Zug AG, is very annoyed and wants the culprits to be made to pay for the damage. "If they can, I will pursue the matter," he said.
