Canton acts to increase safety on Blegi curve

Regular readers will know how often a section of the A4 motorway known as the Blegi curve has been mentioned in relation to accidents there. Now the canton is acting by reducing the maximum speed permitted there and altering the road markings.

Only last week was it reported how one young woman driver lost control over her vehicle there while driving in wet conditions. Fortunately, she was not seriously injured and no other vehicle was involved, though much damage to her car and crash barriers on both sides was caused.

The Swiss Federal Office of Transport in conjunction with the Zug Police have been analysing the situation on this stretch of the motorway for some time. Now they have decided that the maximum speed permitted there will be reduced from 80 kph to 70 kph. As mentioned, road markings are to be altered, too. Indeed, these will go ahead imminently, starting on Monday 25 and continuing until Wednesday 27 July. In order to cause as little disruption as possible, the cantonal authorities will be carrying out the work at night and at other times when there is less traffic.

While on motorways, two American men were escorted by police off the A4a motorway after they were spotted cycling between Sihlbrugg and Zug shortly after 5.30 am on Wednesday morning. The two said they had been training for the Ironman Switzerland competition which takes place in Zurich next Sunday and only inadvertently found themselves on the motorway. Both were fined.
