Brochure full of interesting facts about the canton now available free

The latest brochure full of interesting statistics about the canton has now been published by the Zuger Kantonalbank and is available free of charge from any of its branches.

Entitled “Der Kanton Zug in Zahlen” (the canton of Zug in figures) the brochure has been published in cooperation with the Cantonal Office of Statistics and provides all sorts of interesting information, not least about the number of people who live here. Last year the population of the canton rose to 122,134, with 20,000 people having moved here since the millennium, the municipality of Risch showing the greatest increase at +42%.

The statistics also show that the canton’s inhabitants are very wealthy, with the GDP amounting to CHF 155,548 per head, making Zug the second richest canton after Basel when viewed in these terms. By comparison, the GDP of the canton of Lucerne is just CHF 63,860.

The wealth of the canton of Zug has also acted as a magnet for people of other nationalities to move here. In 2015 as many as 32,977 foreigners lived in the canton, amounting to 27% of the total population. Most of them live in Walchwil, with the fewest in Hünenberg, the largest foreign community being made up of Germans.

Further statistics show that a total number of 30,939 companies employed as many as 100,000 in 2015. For those lucky enough to be able to live in the canton, over 1,000 flats have been built every year since 2011. Naturally this has meant there is little space for new developments in some municipalities. For example, the municipality of Cham has only 14 hectares of land left for housing development. The municipality with the largest area of land available for such purposes, at 43 hectares, is Steinhausen. Many people hoping to move here will not be surprised to learn that, in 2015, only 0.46% of housing units in the canton were unoccupied.

Other interesting statistics showed that, last year, less waste was produced by inhabitants. Whereas the amount produced per person in 2014 was 169 kilogrammes, last year it was down to 167.

As to medical provision, there were 78 GP surgeries and 12 specialist ones in the canton in 2015. With the higher population, it is not surprising that the emergency services were called out 4,895 occasions last year, 500 more times than in 2014.

Other statistics reveal from which countries most tourists here come. The brochure also shows what the turn-out was for various elections, such as those for the National Council in Bern.

As mentioned, the brochure is available at no cost from any branch of the Zuger Kantonalbank. Alternatively, the information can be found on www.zugerkb.ch/zug-in-zahlen.
