Biography of Marc Rich published

Many people flocked to the Balmer bookshop in the city on Thursday to buy the biography of the canton's most prominent citizen, raw materials dealer Marc Rich (photograph).

Although Rich himself was invited, he was not able to attend as he was in Marbella. However, the author, former economics editor of the Swiss political journal "Weltwoche", Daniel Amman, was present to launch his newly published book, which has already become the best selling non-fiction work in Switzerland. After many years of trying in vain to get an interview with Rich, Amman eventually succeeded, giving up his job at "Weltwoche" to concentrate on his new task.

Persistence clearly paid off for Amman. "I first asked Rich for an interview 10 years ago but was refused," he said, "and then I tried again every six months. It took seven years before he agreed."

Amman spent 18 months writing the book, which was first published in English in America and now it is available in German. It is not so much that there are any great revelations in the book, it is more the intriacte detail about his subject.

Rich was on the FBI's most-wanted list for 17 years for allegedly avoiding payment of USD 48 million, fraud, organised crime but most of all "trading with the enemy", meaning states such as Iran. However, Rich never had to stand trial, having been pardoned by President Clinton on leaving office in 2001.

Amman was impressed by Rich's entrepreneurial spirit. "I thought at first he was just a speculator, until I realised he really planned his business on a long-term basis."

Today, Rich lives in Meggen in the canton of Lucerne and runs the Glencore company with its headquarters in Baar.
