Aviaries and animal enclosure to continue to get financial support

The greater city council has agreed to continue to provide financial support for the aviaries on Landsgemeindeplatz and the nearby animal enclosure to the tune of CHF 138,000 annually for the next five years. Indeed such was the support on the council that this was passed in a unanimous vote.

The council is clearly aware that both the aviaries and animal enclosure are very popular with locals and visitors alike. The former are actually 100 years old and both these and the enclosure are run by the Zug Ornithological Association. It is thanks to much voluntary work on their part that costs are not much higher.

The council is actually being asked to provide CHF 130,000 to the association, which also trains a keeper. The costs for this mean a further CHF 12,000 a year for which the city is to provide two-thirds, with the association paying the rest.

A proposal from Jürg Messmer of the SVP party would have meant contributions from the city being reduced to three years rather than five, but this was rejected by a great majority.

Among the birds which can be seen in the aviaries are grey parrots, (main and fourth photographs), snowy owls, (second and third photographs) and Chinese blue-breasted quails (fifth photograph).
