Avalanche danger on local slopes
There is currently far more snow than usual on the slopes around Central Switzerland, meaning that the avalanche warnings are at high levels and expected to rise even further.
Andermatt has two-and-a-half times its usual amounts of snow for January, while Titlis has three times as much. Members of the Swiss Snow and Avalanche Research Institute (Institut für Schnee- und Lawinenforschung, or SLF), based in Davos, are expecting another 60 – 100 centimetres of snow above 1,500 metres by this Friday, meaning that certain road and rail links may well have to be closed temporarily.
Adding to the danger are the extremely high winds that many resorts are experiencing at the moment. This, combined with the well-above-average snowfall, has led the SLF to classify the avalanche risk as "significant", and it is set to rise to "high" in the near future.
