: Dianne Schepers’s Wondrous World of Wool
Sculpting with wool, Dianne Schepers layers vibrant hues of this earthy and raw fiber with other natural elements as diverse as cashmere, silk, yak fur, found or received cloth remnants, and even the bits of straw that get tangled into sheep fleece, to create added dimension, contrast, and poetry to her three dimensional wall pieces. In her hands, Scheper’s choice of felt wool—which she describes as the world’s most intelligent fibre, capable of insulating both heat and sound—is far from its better known utilitarian history, or even the iconic, yet banal, felt wool suit of the artist Joseph Beuys. Starting from images of nature, which offers her a continuous source of inspiration, Schepers may make small studies or proceed directly with the raw wool itself dyed into a spectrum of colors, rubbing it vigorously with water to achieve the desired density of felt, then freely and intuitively shaping, weaving, and threading her assorted materials into a subtle balance of pure form and sensual opulence.
While the works possess a certain sense of her intense and painstaking process, the finished results feel more light and airy than arduous. In viewing her compositions, the eyes are baited into a flowing movement as they trace numerous bands of color and texture and trail undulating filaments of glossy and luminous silk contrasted by loopy curly yarn. And because of their inherent sensuality, Schepers allows and even invites gentle caressing of her lush works to allow one’s sense of touch to enhance one’s experience. This tactile quality of her work has become the most paramount feature in a current project she is producing for the blind. Five large wool panels combining painted silks by the artist Ellen Brook and Braille felted wool “balls” by Schepers, will tell stories—challenging the notion of how we experience art. The installation will debut in 2012 in San Francisco and travel to various art and design venues, as well as centers for the blind in the United States, with a hopeful European tour. The artists intend to auction the work at the end of the traveling exhibition and donate proceeds to a project or organizations dedicated to helping visually impaired children.
