Arms amnesty in the canton

The population of the canton will shortly be able to hand over unwanted weapons of various types to the police for disposal free of charge.

Two years ago, the canton launched a new initiative allowing people to hand over weapons, perhaps unwanted guns which had been left to them as inheritance, to the police authorities. Some 1,000 arms were duly handed in and other cantons followed in Zug's footsteps.

Beat Villiger, the cantonal head of security, has decided to provide this amnesty again wo coincide with the "Mental Health Month" which is to be held from 10 September to 10 October. Villiger said that the aim was partly to reduce the number of weapons in circulation and thereby possible suicides. The amnesty is being organised in cooperation with the Civil Defence and Military Department and the cantonal police.

People will also be able to hand over ammunition and weapon accessories as well as airguns and unwanted imitation weapons. Military weapons will also be able to be handed in as long as these were officially given to the owner upon leaving military service. Weapons in circulation provided to military personnel and still owned by the Swiss Military will not be accepted.

Weapons may be handed in to the Zug Police on Saturday 18 September from 9 am until 2 pm. They may also be handed in at any time at the police station at 4 An der Aa, 6301 Zug, between 8 am and 12 noon and between 2 pm and 6 pm.
