Apartments for the elderly ready by 2018

The "Duet" project from the Axess-Architekten company in Zug has been selected for the former Waldheim  retirement home. The Stiftung Alterszentren (foundation for old age centres) and the Bürgergemeinde Zug (Zug civil community) announced that a broadly-based jury had selected the project over five competing projects. The study foresees a seven-storey building and a six-storey building on the site of the former Waldheim retirement home. These will house 50 apartments for elderly persons, each with 2½ or 3½ rooms. Additional services, such as cleaning, a prepared meal service and maintenance, can also be purchased from the Frauensteinmatt elderly persons centre as needed.

"The concept convinced us," says Hans Christen, president of the Stiftung Alterszentren Zug. "It is ideally designed for the needs of older residents. The architects have worked together with experts in this field in order to develop an age-appropriate concept. In addition, all the apartments have views, and the surrounding area has been carefully handled," continues Christen.

This studies from the Zug architectural firm will now be developed further. According to the President of the Board of Trustees, the aim is that the finished project should be ready in October, so that the Bürgergemeinde Zug can apply for the required construction loan at their meeting in December. The financial framework is not yet clear. "It’s too early for an accurate cost estimate. We will have to wait for the finalised project.” adds Christen "

The planning application will be made as soon as the project is finalised in the autumn. "In the best case - if there are no objections – we may have the building permit in February 2016," estimates Christians. “We could then start with the demolition of the existing building. We then anticipate a construction period of around two years, and, ideally, could rent out the apartments by the beginning of 2018. "
