Accident narrowly avoided as rockfall almost hits road

|
A huge piece of rock weighing 60 kilos rolled down a hill and came to a standstill just before a steep road leading from Rägetenschürli to Tschuepishof near Zug, while a smaller rock rolled down as far as Rägetenschürli itself. Fortunately no-one was injured in the incident which occurred last week, but the authorities are coming in for criticism after they had been warned as early as last autumn, when the potential problem was discovered.
Andreas Zimmermann, the owner of the land from where the rock fell, was not at all happy with the way the authorities dealt with the problem. "The police told me to contact the maintenance depot and they in turn told me to tell the forestry office. I got the impression I was not being taken seriously," he said. "I realised there was a problem and was prepared to have the rock blasted at my own expense to avoid any danger of it falling. However, I was persuaded not to. Now I wished I'd never asked and just blasted the rock myself. The forestry office were more concerned about the ecological consequences than any danger to passers-by. My daughter Nadine walked by the critical point only half-an-hour before the rock fell - it's lucky no-one was killed."
No-one was available for comment from the forestry office yesterday but a report shows the site of the rock was visited by a representative of the forestry authorities along with Zimmermann and Christian Horat, who was renting the land at the time. It was clear then that the one cubic metre rock could easily have become dislodged and fallen to the road at any time, though the road itself is not frequently used. The forestry office had planned to dig a hole by the end of February to ensure the rock would not fall, but failed to do so in time.
