A treat for trainspotters

Last Monday evening a new Twindexx train made by the Canadian Bombardier company was seen at platform seven on Zug station. Not to worry if you missed it, they will be able to be seen more frequently in future.
Looking at it at first glance, it may appear nothing out of the ordinary, though the red livery on the front is rather striking.

As SBB spokesman Christian Ginsig explained, the company ordered 59 such trains, RABe 502s, of different lengths in 2010, costing CHF 1.9 billion in all. In fact this was the biggest order the SBB had ever made. They were originally intended to be deployed on the main east-west route across Switzerland in 2013, but delivery was delayed and Bombardier had to provide three additional trains in compensation.

Ginsig explained further that Bombardier was currently conducting tests with them on a number of routes. “We want them to be in absolute top condition, particularly when it comes to safety; there is no room for any compromise in this regard,” he said as he went on to explain that, if they met the demanding standards, they would be entering into service. This means that the first passengers to use them would be able to do so in the second half of this year, though Ginsig was not able to say when such trains would be operating on a regular basis.
