47-year-old driver injured in head-on collision

A 47-year-old driver was injured in a head-on crash on the main road between Aegeri and Zug on Monday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3.15 pm as a 47-year-old driver was heading towards Zug on the 381 Cantonal Road. For reasons not yet confirmed, he lost control over his vehicle between Schmittli and Nidfuren, veered over onto the wrong side of the road and crashed head-on with a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction before colliding with the crash barrier. In so doing he was slightly injured. Fortunately the other driver, a 34-year old, was not hurt at all.

In investigating the incident further, the police think the accident may have been caused by the 47-year-old having been suddenly taken ill at the wheel. He was subsequently freed from the wreckage of his car by the Zug Voluntary Fire Brigade and then treated on the spot by the emergency services before being flown to hospital  by Rega helicopter.

The road affected was only passable through an alternating one-way traffic flow for up to two hours after the incident.
