42nd Zug Fair about to start

The 42nd Zug Fair starts this coming Saturday and continues until and including Sunday 2 November. Over the course of these nine days as many as 80,000 visitors are expected on the Stierenmarkt and no fewer than 450 regional, national and foreign exhibitors will be presenting their products and services.

This year the guest region is Goms in the canton of Wallis with its nearby tourist attractions in Obergoms, Bellwald and the Aletsch Arena. It is here where you can find one of the longest cross-country skiing runs and biggest winter walking areas in Switzerland (second photograph). What is more, it is only 90 minutes away from Zug. Its tourist offices will be at the fair to tell you all about the area including what culinary delights it has to offer.

This year Cham has been chosen as honorary municipality and this lakeshore community will be showing itself off at its best from 3 pm until 10 pm on Wednesday 29 October, with a number of local associations presenting all they do. Representatives of the local council will also be on hand and a special presentation will be made of the local millet beer.

In addition there will be a variety of special exhibitions, ranging from Harley Davidson motor cycles to a demonstration of the work of sniffer dogs by the Swiss Customs Administration and advice from the Zug Police about how best to prevent burglary. The Zug Farmers' Association will also be there with stands showing all they do. Not least, the Swiss Sports Museum will be showing a collection of bobsleighs from the last 100 years (third photograph). In fact you can even have a go in a bob simulator. Local interior designers will be showing off their latest products, too.

As to other attractions, there will be a fashion show as well as a competition for Miss Charming Zug 2014 and displays of Asian dancing. Children will be particularly pleased to know there will also be a Big Wheel, petting zoo and an old steam locomotive to enjoy. Naturally, there will be plenty of hot and cold refreshments provided by a wide variety of cafés, bars and restaurants.

One special highlight will be the stand of the Neue Zuger Zeitung in Hall A3, where you have the chance of winning a tablet every day. And from 2 pm on Sunday 27 October, players of the EVZ ice hockey team will be signing autographs.

The fair is actually open from 2 pm until 10 pm on Monday to Fridays and from 10.30 am until 10 pm on Saturdays. On Sunday 26 October it will open at 10.30 am and continue until 8 pm. On the last day, Sunday 2 November, it will also open at 10.30 pm but close at 8 pm.

Restaurants and cafés will be open longer; details can be found on www.zugermesse.ch.

Admission is CHF 14 for adults with children up to 12 accompanied by parents free. For young people between the ages of 12-16, apprentices and students, admission costs CHF 12. There are also special tickets valid for the whole 9 days of the fair at CHF 36.
