350 archers compete in local competition

There was a hint of William Tell about the 350 crossbow archers who came from all over Switzerland to compete in a competition in Baar over the weekend.

"Crossbow archers are down-to-earth people," said Leo Hüsser, who was responsible for the competition and who has been Swiss champion in crossbow archery on seven occasions. "It is relatively easy to learn but you need years of practice to be able to do it well and you need to be able to judge the light, the shadows and the wind."

Bernhard Rüst, from Niederscherli in the canton of Aargau, returns to his former home in Baar every week to train for competitions and managed to score his best result of the season at the weekend's event.

Toni Weiss from Turgi explained how the arrows, which weigh 26-28 grammes, cut through the air in a curve at 215 kph. "Actually working out its trajectory is quite a challenge," he said.

Hüsser was only disappointed that there were so few spectators over the weekend but hoped that more would attend this coming weekend. "Not many people knew about it and crossbow archery is a very quiet, environmentally friendly sport which can be held in residential areas as we make no noise."

Another problem was that there were so few archers on the Sunday, though according to Hüsser, one reason could have been the final of a major archery event in Ettiswil in the canton of Lucerne which always attracts so many competitors.
