24-year-old drunk driver abandons overturned vehicle

A 24-year-old drunk driver abandoned his car on a city-centre street in the early hours of Monday morning.

The incident happened shortly after 1 am on Industriestrasse where the British driver hit a parked vehicle. This caused him to lose control over his car resulting in it rolling over and ending up on its side. Once he was able to free himself from the wreckage the young man made off without reporting it.

Witnesses who noticed the incident called the police who duly came to investigate. Two hours later they received information from the hospital that the driver had made his way there for treatment to his injuries, which were not serious, but more than slight.

When asked about the incident, the driver said he was not able to remember anything about it. His driving licence was duly confiscated and he was subjected to a breathalyser test which revealed he had been driving with over twice the permitted level of alcohol. He was then taken off to provide specimens of blood and urine.

Damage to the tune of CHF 20,000 was caused and the incident meant that Industriestrasse had to be closed to traffic for up to one hour.

In a second road traffic incident in Oberägeri on Monday afternoon, both a pedestrian and scooter rider were injured.

The incident happened shortly before 5.30 pm on Morgartenstrasse as a 22-year-old was on the zebra crossing near the Hirschen restaurant. Suddenly a 53-year-old scooter rider approached from the Unterägeri direction but failed to see the pedestrian and ran into him. Both were injured. The pedestrian was taken to hospital for treatment to the slight injuries he sustained but the 53-year-old was flown to hospital by helicopter. Fortunately, his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
